Generalization of Meyer’s ferroelectricity to cholesteric phase : electroclinic coupling and prediction of a new ferrocholesteric phase

چکیده

We present a generalization of Meyer's theory of the trilinear coupling between the smectic layers, the tilt angle of the optical axis with respect to the layer normal and the electric polarization which accounts for the spontaneous ferroelectricity in smectic C* liquid crystals. This coupling allows for the description of the electroclinic effect, I-ethe appearance of a polarization and a tilt angle induced by an extemal electric field in smectic C*, smectic A and N* (cholesteric) phases. A new « ferrocholesteric » phase is expected between C* and N* phases when the local order is smectic C*-like with a small but non-zero polarization. Eventually, a comparison is made with experimental data available in N* phase.

Poster 71 New Discotic Triphenylene Derivatives exhibiting a Cholesteric Blue Phase and Ferroelectric Switching in Columnar Mesophases

Since a very early stage of discotic liquid crystal research, triphenylene derivatives are known to be useful materials for the study of discotic liquid crystals. Recently, their importance as photoconducting materials was recognized [1]. Blue phases had only been observed in binary mixtures [2, 3]. It took over ten years to experimentally verify [4] J. Prost’s prediction of ferroelectricity in...

Effects of coupling on turbulent gas-particle boundary layer flows at borderline volume fractions using kinetic theory

This study is concerned with the prediction of particles’ velocity in a dilute turbulent gas-solidboundary layer flow using a fully Eulerian two-fluid model. The closures required for equationsdescribing the particulate phase are derived from the kinetic theory of granular flows. Gas phaseturbulence is modeled by one-equation model and solid phase turbulence by MLH theory. Resultsof one-way and...

Analysis of Oscillation Amplitude and Phase Error in Multiphase LC Oscillators

Abstract   This work proposes a novel method to find the phase error and oscillation amplitude in multiphase LC oscillators. A mathematical approach is used to find the relationship between every stage's output phase and its coupling factor. To much more general analysis, every stage assumed to have a different coupling factor. The mismatches in LC tanks are considered as the main source of pha...

In this work, the dispersed phase holdup in a Kühni extraction column is predicted using intelligent methods and a new empirical correlation. Intelligent techniques, including multilayer perceptron and radial basis functions network are used in the prediction of the dispersed phase holdup. To design the network structure and train and test the networks, 174 sets of experimental data are used. T...

Theory of polymer-dispersed cholesteric liquid crystals.

A mean field theory is presented to describe cholesteric phases in mixtures of a polymer and a cholesteric liquid crystal. Taking into account an anisotropic coupling between a polymer and a liquid crystal, we examine the helical pitch, twist elastic constant, and phase separations. Analytical expressions of the helical pitch of a cholesteric phase and the twist elastic constant are derived as ...
